| "I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts." — Herman Melville Moby Dick In 1980 I took my first overseas trip to Southeast Asia. I bought an Olympus OM-2 camera and 3 lenses in Hong Kong on the way to Thailand. Since that trip, my craft as an amateur photographer has been growing and evolving. Traveling worldwide is when I do much of my shooting; I love to bring back images of different people, culture, landscapes and animals that aren’t everyday sights to us here. I'm always carrying a tripod, two or more camera bodies, several lenses, filters and other essentials. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning to get the right light for the perfect shot…much to the chagrin of my wife (or whomever my travel companion may be). My day job has allowed me to equip myself with what can be considered professional gear, and in the last 10 years I have shot numerous weddings, high school, collegiate and professional sports, magazine covers and articles for different trade journals, architecture and some portraits. My most recent interest has been in Astrophotography. Using a special CCD camera cooled to -30 degrees C, extremely long exposures and filters of varying wavelengths, I am able to compose colorful and detailed images of star clusters, galaxies and molecular clouds. I have been married to my wife Laura for 29 years - also a Veterinarian. We have raised three great kids who are now young adults; Joseph, 26, works in contract administration for a construction firm; LeeAnn, 24, is in her second year at the UC Davis Veterinary School; and Samara, 21, is a senior undergraduate at UCLA. Feel free to contact with any questions regarding these subjects, on equipment or technique. |
